** One knows that the census form should have been completed and signed by the householder and one would assume that the form was done by Charles Lennard. But, on his sons birth certificate in 1884, under signature, description and residence of informant appears X The Mark of Charles Goldsmith, Father, 17 Millbank Street, Westminster.
It would appear that my grandfather, Charles Lennard, may possibly have been illiterate and that someone else may have completed the form on his behalf who did not know the correct age of either Charles Lennard or William Charles and who had some reason for concealing the (under-age) marriage on 17 November (not October) 1910 of Henry and Bertha Violet. Charles George
