Mary Ann Goldsmith

troubles
The sad story of Mary Ann Goldsmith and family

Mary Ann with Gertrude and Bertha

Mary Ann with Gertrude and Bertha

Goldsmiths 1891 Census Westminster

Goldsmiths 1891 Census Westminster

Mary Ann Goldsmith 's two baby sisters died, her mother died when she was 3, she herself died giving birth to her daughter Ruth, Ruth subsequently died giving birth to her daughter Cristine Ann. Her brother William Charles died later in the same year.
Mary Ann was born at 10 Hudsons Terrace in 1878 in Westminster - daughter of Charles Leonard Goldsmith b Rede Suffolk 1846 and Elizabeth Quick b Barnstable 1841. There were four children during the marriage William Charles, Mary Ann , Elizabeth Ann and Harriet Augusta. Sadly Elizabeth Ann and Harriet died. Wife Elizabeth died in November 1881, it appears Charles Leonard returned to Suffolk and brought back Clara Ann Selina Clarke and her baby Lawrence to Westminster. The couple married and went on to have four more children Charles, Gertrude Mary ,Tom and Bertha. The family lived at the turn of the century in Millbank Street Westminster and later in various addresses in Ponsonby Place and Terrace, where Charles and Tom ran shops.
Gertrude Mary married Harry Bird on 27.07.1909 at Westminster Registry Office whilst pregnant with her first child , their address was 215 Vauxhall Bridge Road, they left Westminster at the end of WW1, the family moving gradually South West eventually settling in Torquay Devon. She appears to be the only family member to have moved away, apart from Bertha and her family who emigrated to Australia in 1949. See Bird pages for Gertrude's full story click to view

Mary Ann married Edgar Woodward aged 36 yrs also at Westminster Registry Office on 31 August 1912. She also gave her address as 215 Vauxhall Bridge Road, Harry and Gertrude's shop. The couple had two children Emma and Ruth Mary, Emma was born on 6.11.1912 so Mary Ann was obviously pregnant like Gertrude when she married, Edgar was from Suffolk & resided at 32 Causton Street Westminster at the time of marriage. Edgar was born 1.10.1876 and died 1961. He was the son of Ezekiel Woodward Suffolk.

Sadly Mary Ann died after giving birth to Ruth at 72 Regency Street Westminster and was interred in Streatham Park Cemetery. After Mary died Edgar joined the army and Emma was sent to Suffolk to be cared for by relatives on the Woodward side, ( Baby Ruth remained in London perhaps she was brought up by her grandparents Clara and Charles or other members of the family) The two sisters saw very little of one another over the years. Later in life Edgar joined his family in Suffolk.
Emma married George Bryenton on 17.11.1934 in Cratfield Parish Church and continued to live in Suffolk, she was in service in a house in Southwold for a time before she married.

WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO VALERIE, MARY ANN'S GRANDAUGHTER

John Bryenton born Cratfield 1797 - 1890 ( Died in Canada )
Bryenton of Suffolk

We have had contact from Tyson Bryanton of Canada who is interested in researching his family history

His branch of the family appear to have emigrated around the mid 1840's when the surname
became spelt with an 'a'.

On earlier UK census sheets the name is spelt Brainton and Bryant due to transcription errors

John Bryenton born 1730 Brandeston Suffolk m Sarah Davie born 1730
Son George Davie Bryenton born 1752 married Lucy Squires in Cratfield Parish Church in 1771

The couple had nine children, three of the sons George, John and Michael all emigrated to Canada, the youngest son William died 1878 in the Union Workhouse Westleton Blything.
Four daughters Lucy, Susan, Sarah and Martha all married and appeared to have remained in the Cratfield area.
All the children carried the middle name Squires.
William's son Lemuel Ethelred Bryenton born 1824 emigrated to Victoria Australia and married Dorinda Saltry in Melbourne. Creating another branch of the family there.

Their eldest son George Squires married Elizabeth Cutts in Cratfield Parish Church there is a record of their son Robert Cutts Bryenton arriving in Ontario in 1845 , subsequently his son George Bryenton born 1845 Prince Edward Island in 1910 moved to Tennessee creating another branch of the family in the USA
All surnames in North America from this point spelt Bryanton.

More research to be carried out to find the connection to our family
and further information greatly appreciated !

I spoke to my brother Les, and he can remember Emma and George going to London to Ruth's funeral, perhaps they stayed with Edgar because Les and my sisters went to stay with a relative for a couple of days. I expect that was the furthest my father had ever traveled. Valerie

(This must have been Edgar and his sister Gertrude, Aunt Gerty lived at Saxmundham when I was at school. I would call on her on my way home sometimes and she would always give me a sixpence, she was a dear) - Valerie
I wonder whether our Auntie Gertie ( Mary Ann's sister ) knew about these sad events in Westminster? We had the same tragedy in Devon on 27.10.1947 an aunt dying whilst giving birth with Gertie present - fortunately the baby survived. Janice

We paid a visit to north Suffolk yesterday, Ubbeston church has been privately owned since the 1970s but you can still access a small part of the graveyard, and there we found the graves of Alfred's parents, Elizabeth and William Warne, Elizabeth died 10/02/1954 aged 59 and William 02/12/1954 aged 67.
There was also a Samuel died 17/03/1927 aged 75 husband of Mary Anne Warne and their son Henry died 01/04/1929 aged 42.
Perhaps Alfred did return to Suffolk, seeing that he died in Norwich hospital. Valerie 10.11.08

I am related to Alfred Warne who was my grandfather. He remarried Elsie Manners and had 3 daughters, one of which was my mother, Allison.
Thank you so much for giving me the website address. It was great to see a picture of my grandfather
I can let you know that Alfred's dad was called William Warne and his mother was called Elizabeth Florence Warne nee Allen. Alfred was born in Blything, Suffolk in December 1915 and died in Norwich after having a double amputation of his legs on August 28th 1982. My nans name was Elsie Gladys Manners and like I said they had 3 daughters called Shirley Pauline, Allison Mary and Violet Elizabeth Warne. Unfortunately Shirley passed away earlier this year but both Ally and Vi are alive and well. My mum tells me that when my grandparents met my nan already had a daughter from a previous relationship with a canadian GI.
I think there is more to this as Alfred was actually born in Blything which is very near to Saxmundham, which I noticed is mentioned in your family information. I have got a copy of my grandfathers marriage certificate to Ruth which states that they were married on the 22nd July 1943, Alfred was a Sergeant in the Royal fusiliers and Ruth was a Private. They were married in the registry office, Epsom.

I am Elizabeth Frances (nee Warne). My father was William Warne 1913 - 1994, he was the eldest and Alfred (Bertie) was one of his brothers. The only surviving sibling is IRIS (1922) who is a lovely lady and lives in Canada. Spoke to her yesterday about Alfred and Ruth which she confirmed. Their father was William Warne 1887 - 1954 and Mother Elizabeth Allen 1895 - 1954. I think you have the wrong "Florence Elizabeth" in your tree. But I am still trying to track her down. We assumed that my name was taken from her and therefore she was an Elizabeth Frances Allan. Perhaps you can throw some more light on her. I will try and cobble some more info together for you.
