Mary Ann Goldsmith 's two baby sisters died, her mother died when she was 3, she herself died giving birth to her daughter Ruth, Ruth subsequently died giving birth to her daughter Cristine Ann. Her brother William Charles died later in the same year.
Mary Ann was born at 10 Hudsons Terrace in 1878 in Westminster - daughter of Charles Leonard Goldsmith b Rede Suffolk 1846 and Elizabeth Quick b Barnstable 1841. There were four children during the marriage William Charles, Mary Ann , Elizabeth Ann and Harriet Augusta. Sadly Elizabeth Ann and Harriet died. Wife Elizabeth died in November 1881, it appears Charles Leonard returned to Suffolk and brought back Clara Ann Selina Clarke and her baby Lawrence to Westminster. The couple married and went on to have four more children Charles, Gertrude Mary ,Tom and Bertha. The family lived at the turn of the century in Millbank Street Westminster and later in various addresses in Ponsonby Place and Terrace, where Charles and Tom ran shops.
Gertrude Mary married Harry Bird on 27.07.1909 at Westminster Registry Office whilst pregnant with her first child , their address was 215 Vauxhall Bridge Road, they left Westminster at the end of WW1, the family moving gradually South West eventually settling in Torquay Devon. She appears to be the only family member to have moved away, apart from Bertha and her family who emigrated to Australia in 1949. See Bird pages for Gertrude's full story
click to viewMary Ann married Edgar Woodward aged 36 yrs also at Westminster Registry Office on 31 August 1912. She also gave her address as 215 Vauxhall Bridge Road, Harry and Gertrude's shop. The couple had two children Emma and Ruth Mary, Emma was born on 6.11.1912 so Mary Ann was obviously pregnant like Gertrude when she married, Edgar was from Suffolk & resided at 32 Causton Street Westminster at the time of marriage. Edgar was born 1.10.1876 and died 1961. He was the son of Ezekiel Woodward Suffolk.
Sadly Mary Ann died after giving birth to Ruth at 72 Regency Street Westminster and was interred in Streatham Park Cemetery. After Mary died Edgar joined the army and Emma was sent to Suffolk to be cared for by relatives on the Woodward side, ( Baby Ruth remained in London perhaps she was brought up by her grandparents Clara and Charles or other members of the family) The two sisters saw very little of one another over the years. Later in life Edgar joined his family in Suffolk.
Emma married George Bryenton on 17.11.1934 in Cratfield Parish Church and continued to live in Suffolk, she was in service in a house in Southwold for a time before she married.
WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO VALERIE, MARY ANN'S GRANDAUGHTER
