Italian Mementos

Italy entered the war in 1915 and suffered catastrophic defeats on the Austrian front but gained substantial territory from Austria at the peace treaties. The main language spoken in the Dolomite region is still German.

Half of Italian casualties (300,000 of 6000,000) were suffered along the Isonzo river. The Isonzo is located today in present-day Slovenia. During the First World War however the sixty-mile long river ran north-south just inside Austria along its border with Italy at the head of the Adriatic Sea and then (as now) was flanked by mountains on either side.
