Watson

The Rothermel/Watsons

With the help of our friends Bille and Folker from Stuttgart we have finally traced the origins of the Rothermel family to Hörlebach near Schäwbisch Hall in Germany. Three brothers came to Wellingborough Northants around 1872/75 after their father re-married. They were sons of a farmer Johann Georg Michael Rothermel and set themselves up as Pork Butchers in Wellingborough High Street.
More research needs to be carried out into who 'Mr Watson' was and what Barbara Lena Rothermel was doing in Bradford in 1908/09.......

From 1875 - present a man could only be named as the father on a birth certificate if he consented and was also present when the birth was registered.
Space for father’s name is usually left blank on birth certificates of illegitimates
The father may agree to let the child take his name

Sometimes a mother was embarrassed about the illegitimacy so she would fabricate the name of the father and call herself Mrs. Mary Jones when in fact she was unwed.
