We were not informed of illness, death or funeral, so were unable to say our goodbyes
or pay our respects.
Past differences are usually put to one side for family funerals, but that was not the case when Spencer died
A funeral is a rite of passage, a celebration of life, a chance for those left behind to examine their thoughts and feelings for those that have departed. Happy memories and sad, to serenade the deceased on their final journey. Some family members were prevented from doing this - leaving a void of 'unfinished business'........

Spencer - mother named him after E Spenser..She was proud of reading The Faerie Queene and of reading all of Dickens. Dad registered him only a few hours after birth so either he or the Registrar could have made a mistake with the spelling on the birth certificate. Thalia

Spencer was the reason why we built and launched this website which is so popular with extended family and researchers throughout the world today . After initial enthusiasm and the setting up of a 'private' website with Janice to display family photos and material in 2003/4 - he turned against Thalia and Janice and refused to co-operate further, culminating in threats to Janice. As new data was now being published on the internet of family trees with research facilities, our family history became more and more exciting and we became so frustrated with his failure to communicate we felt we had to provide a portal for our findings to be displayed in a public place for everyone to share.

"I hate you and the whole family hate you ( for creating this website), my sister thinks you are 'despicable 'and my wife and two sons say you are 'stark raving mad' . With such a site manager we are all in danger of having absolutely anything up there and without redress"
( transcipt from telephone conversation to Janice July 2007)

He did telephone Thalia a few years later to apologise for being horrendous to her over the years and that he knew many family members enjoyed looking at the site.

With new information received in January 2013 via this website we now understand why
Spencer was fearful of seeing personal details about himself published on this website .....

A Poem

A Poem

To Susan, Julia and Spencer

Childhood after the War

The countryside belonged to me
Footloose and fancy free.
No computer or TV

The countryside belonged to us
on foot or local bus.
We were four and made our own law
Out of doors all day, up and away
We climbed the trees and watched the bees

We could get in a mess without adults being mean,
not always oppressed to be tidy and clean.
We had old clothes to play in, patched and worn.
No need to worry about clothes being torn.
We could slide in the mud and roll in the grass,
get spiderwebs in our hair, exploring the past,
we learned fast
We could make our own judgements about what was safe
Look out for each other, keep secret our mistakes.

So few cars after the war
We went everywhere without a care,
With brown bread, cheese and a pear
Shorts and shirts, sandals, no socks
Our bare brown legs scratched and stung,
Nettle stings sorted out with docks

None of us had a watch
The sun and shadows were our clock

The local priest gave me the creeps
We learnt to be wise
We were flashed at but SO WHAT
We went where we should and where we should not
We came home for tea happy tired dusty and hot
Mother trusted us and never made a fuss.

We were like the wild flowers
With tousled heads
Not blooms in weeded garden beds

Spencer specialised in prototype electronic engineering, which meant he did not normally take products to production. In co-operation with his clients he often made production-like fully working models. In this way he enabled them to make a better assessment of their product ideas before they commited to production. He worked extensively with other designers and design engineers over many years in both product design and art installations.
Spencer had a varied career with many interests including photography, playing and recording music and poetry.

He created many websites over the years, also a book of poetry and photographs

I went and stood on the white cliffs
at Beer and staring out to the horizon
I saw - nothing. So I walked over
the headland to the cliffs of Branscombe.
There it was clear, I could see the coast
all the way to where......

A favourite artist of both Spencer and Janice, he made compilation CD's for Janice

Well those drifter's days are past me now
I've got so much more to think about
Deadlines and commitments
What to leave in, what to leave out

Against the wind
I'm still runnin' against the wind
I'm older now but still runnin' against the wind
