Newton

We are connected to Sir Isaac Newton through his father Isaac's brother Richard born 1609 Colsterworth Lincs. Then down through his son Richard born 1645. Richard's grandson also Richard born 1704 was married twice, his second wife Elizabeth Gaunt came from Metheringham and their children were born there.

Hence our branch of the Newton family were descendants of the family born in Metheringham

Many members of the family even today carry the name Newton either as first or second names

A small book has been in the possession of the Harry Bird side of the family for many years, and was finally in the possession of Maurice Childs, inside there are signatures of Joseph Newton 1842, Bloxholme , George Newton, Bloxholme and Joseph Newton Sleaford. See next page for images.

Samuel Johnson's 'Dictionary of the English Language' is one of the most famous dictionaries in history. First published in 1755, the dictionary took just over eight years to compile, required six helpers, and listed 40,000 words. Each word was defined in detail, the definitions illustrated with quotations covering every branch of learning. It was a huge scholarly achievement, a more extensive and complex dictionary than any of it's predecessors

Mary Ann Newton married Thomas Bird and was the daughter of John Newton born 1775 Metheringham and Ann Dansby born 1792. John was a brewer.
