Above painting in Scarborough Art Museum
From the time we were environmental activists (there were none before us) exhibiting political environmental art, this painting was given to Scarborough Art Gallery after being in the Art Gallery and the Royal Hotel then owned by Thomas Laughton brother of Charles Laughton. Mc Cains was looking for a site for their Frozen Potato Chips Factory it had to be on the sea to dispose of the raw waste products. Scarborough a Right Wing Authority offered a site with no resriction on discharges to the sea. We ran a campaign saying come to Scarborough and catch your own Fish and Chips on the beach. Mc Cains came but at least the effluent was screened before discharge . Ian

Mareen's wedding Hole of Horcum
|
| Muscian friends and students rented a farmhouse just south of Whitby. This painting is of one their weddings. It took place in Whitby registrar office in a haze of herbal and other smoke which filled the office. Then community dance down the high street with fiddle players. and ,into a large windowless pantechichon - furniture van. ,We were thrown about and sat on the dusty wooden floor for the mystery journey to what turned out to be the top of an 400 foot cliff overlooking the Hole of Horcum, We then shared a purple iced wedding cake , the children behaved perfectly perched on this headland cliff top,as we watched the sun go down. They became successful in the pop music world

Alf the Boatman at the feast on Skomer by Ian 1960
|
| Alf and the Skomer feast. The French fishermen in their boats used to come to Skomer,,, they gave us buckets of fresh crabs, and butchered the young male goat, which used to come up behind bird watchers and frequently almost butted them over the cliff edge ,,,The warden had the female goat to supply them with milk. Simon a young man on the island used to shoot pheasants, He had a serious accident with a horse and cart as a child.... With the crews of the two fishing boats and Alf the boatman and a few others we all had a feast of crabs lightly boiled in a bucket roast kid goat, roast pheasants all cooked on a fire of drift wood and rotting house timbers..... Alf was the boat man and many womens bottoms were grabbed as he helped them into the boat..in those pre politically correct days. ian painted this feast event, , difficult with the dusk, the setting sun and the firelight |
